100,000 legal residents in Oregon are eligible to become citizens, but the Immigration Office only receives between 5,000 and 6,000 applications for naturalization each year. This discrepancy in numbers shows that many refrain from applying for citizenship because they believe it to be a daunting, challenging, and costly task.

We are striving to change that. We offer a free citizenship education program to legal residents living in the Portland Metropolitan area that goes beyond “teaching to the test.” With a comprehensive curriculum that emphasizes practical learning and overcomes the language barrier, Mission:Citizen aims to give the tools and confidence to immigrants who want to become civically engaged United States citizens on all levels of our democracy. Additionally, starting in the fall of 2014, Mission: Citizen now offers partial scholarships to help offset the cost of the citizenship exam. These scholarships are only offered to students who complete the eight-week course and pass the mock exam at the end of the last class.
